P1&2 Active Maths & Outdoor Learning
6th Mar 2026
We finished a glorious week in P1 and P2 with a visit to the Little Acorns garden for a session of rich outdoor learning. The children were fully engaged and learning through play as they built, filled, stacked and explored water flow in a variety of ways. Through hands-on experiences, they were pouring, measuring and estimating quantities, developing key mathematical language and skills in a meaningful context.
This outdoor environment provided excellent opportunities for Active Maths, as children explored capacity, comparison and problem-solving through real-life play. They talked about what they noticed, made predictions and adjusted their thinking as they experimented with water and materials.
Some children enjoyed using the see-saw, discussing how it works and discovering ideas of balance and movement, while others took part in imaginative play—creating “stone soup,” inventing games and engaging in cooperative play. These experiences supported learning across the Using Mathematics, The World Around Us, Physical Development and Movement, and Language and Literacy areas of the NI Curriculum.
